At-a-glance
Lake Dardanelle is a navigation pool on the Arkansas River in west-central Arkansas, formed by Dardanelle Lock and Dam in the mid-1960s as part of the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System. The reservoir spans approximately 34,000 acres and stretches through the Ozark foothills between Russellville and the river's downstream navigation pools. Its role in regional commerce, flood management, and water supply makes it a major feature of the Arkansas River basin.
The shoreline follows a long, riverine layout with sweeping bends, creek mouths, backwater areas, and shallow flats alongside the main channel. Submerged structure, sand and gravel bars, points, and defined river ledges create varied habitat along the pool. A mix of open river sections and protected embayments supports diverse aquatic environments from the upper pool through the dam forebay.
Lake Dardanelle supports a productive Arkansas River fishery with established populations of largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and white bass. The lake is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for navigation, flood control, and hydropower while remaining a popular destination for boating, fishing, and outdoor recreation in western Arkansas.
